From myanimelist:
Kim Dong-hwa, a mid-career artist who has consistently created popular works in various genres such as pure manhwa and active drama, was born in Mapo, Seoul in 1950. He started his manga under the guidance of Kim Ki-baek, who was a popular writer at the time, and then under Cha Sung-jin, he made his debut in 1975 under the pen name Kim Jung-jung by publishing the work "My Expanse" in the "Boys' Korea Daily" competition, married manga artist Han Seung-won in 1977, and made a new debut as pure manga artist "Kim Dong-hwa" in 1979 with a five-volume work called "Our Story". Later, in 1980, "My Name is Cindy", serialized in the girls' high school era, quickly began to absorb the generation of pure manga in the 80s, who were enthusiastic about Japanese reproductions of girl comics, and in 1982, "Acacia" and "Poems of the Wooden Horse" continued their popularity, and through harmony with his wife and manga partner Han Seung-won, he established the early style of pure manga in Korea, perfecting a unique column division format such as insertion and overlapping columns that could express the detailed emotional state of the protagonist as well as the unique characters that were very popular in the 80s.
From "Fairy Pink" serialized in Treasure Island in 1984, Kim Dong-hwa rejected the conventions of pure manhwa that he had established and began experimenting with various genres, introducing his delicate style of painting into boy manga and restoring the traditional lines of Joseon style painting. Works such as "The Tale of Ochre Light" and "Hwang Jin-yi" have been serialized in adult manga magazines, but they focus on sensuality that flows through Cannes in a subtle way rather than explicit sexuality, and are considered to have "opened a new horizon for Korean adult comics." In 2010, he was selected as one of the American Library Association's "Top 10 Comics for Young People," and The Red Bicycle was nominated for the 2005 French Critics Award. Kim Dong-hwa's abandonment of popular popularity, entering genre experimentation, and continuing to fight with himself and break new ground even when other writers let go of their pens, will continue to be a great attraction to the public.

<We're Raising Children, Not Flowers> is made up of 14 stories that open closed hearts that connect the warm emotions and laughter of the first volume. Each story tells the viewer how wonderful and precious life is. In Wilma Rudolph, which opens the story, the story of Wilma, who was born prematurely and paralyzed with her legs, and who later became a triple Olympic track and field champion because of her mother's faith, shows that pure faith and love can create miracles. "If you think you can do it, you can," was a phrase her mother told little Wilma as a child, giving Wilma the courage to create miracles. The story of buying more tickets than your own and giving surprises to strangers "Sometimes do the wrong kindness and crazy good deeds in your life" tells us that a seemingly wacky little kindness can change the whole world. In fact, this is an amazing true story that took place in the United States. In addition, 14 other stories, such as "What Happened in the Park," which says that God is with us wherever we live, and "Learning from Mistakes," which is that behind success lurks a process of many failures, warmly remind us of the truth and happiness in life that we are missing in our lives. |

A friendly, good-natured mailman traverses the rural areas of Korea on his red bicycle, dealing out letters and interacting with the letter-writers and recipients along the way. This is the latest work by Kim Dong-hwa Hwabaek, who led the pure manga scene in the 80s with beautiful and bright manga such as "My Name is Cindy" and "Fairy Pink". Since the 90s, Kim Dong-hwa Hwabaek has moved away from the pure manhwa style of "Wang Drop Eyes and Nose Blades" that he popularized, and has introduced works such as "Korean Short Story Literature Anthology," which took advantage of the colors of traditional Korean culture. The Red Bicycle introduced here is another glimpse of his transformation. The fine and pretty atmosphere of the 80s Pure Manhwa he drew combined with the colors of a Korean rural village to create a unique image of "Lyric Manga." The book depicts the daily life of a postman working in a small rural town. A postman who conveys the precious heart of one person, one person. He meets and talks with various people in the village, and tells their stories in the form of independent episodes. The cartoon is made up of warm and warm content, and the pictures are all in color. It's a world where you get more bills than letters from the mailman, but why not buy a beautiful postcard and give someone a short greeting? |

In the tradition of "My Antonia" and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", from the pen of the renowned Korean manwha creator Kim Dong Hwa, comes a trilogy about a girl coming of age, set in the vibrant, beautiful landscape of pastoral Korea. 1. "The Color of Earth": First love is never easy. Ehwa grows up helping her widowed mother run the local tavern, watching as their customers – both neighbors and strangers – look down on her mother for her single lifestyle. Their social status isolates Ehwa and her mother from the rest of the people in their quiet country village. But as she gets older and sees her mother fall in love again, Ehwa slowly begins to open up to the possibility of love in her life. 2. "The Color of Water": When Ehwa goes to the town festival, she meets a handsome young wrestler named Duksam who’s eager to catch her eye. After he wins the festival wrestling championship, he and Ehwa begin to meet, sneaking spare moments to be together. But a shadow falls on their romance when Master Cho sends Duksam away and asks for Ehwa’s hand in marriage himself It is then that Ehwa discovers the pain of heartbreak – and that love is always complicated. 3. "The Color of Heaven": A celebration of the triumph of true love. As Ehwa grew from a girl to a young woman in The Color of Earth and The Color of Water, she began to understand and experience love and relationships, with her mother as a model and confidante. Now, in the heartwarming conclusion to this lyrically written and delicately drawn trilogy, Ehwa's true love comes at last, and as her mother looks on, she takes the final steps towards becoming an adult. ------- A manga depicting a seven-year-old girl who goes through puberty and grows into a woman while meeting the man she loves. It tells the story of the old days of our mothers, who used to dig for herbs in spring and pick flowers in summer. Kim Dong-hwa Hwabaek, who first made a name for herself with her pure manhwa, clearly shows her artist's experimental spirit through this work. Deviating from the traditional pure cartoon paintings that are stereotypical of royal eyes and an eight-back body, he introduced oriental paintings such as space with white space, delicate and thin lines, and elongated eyes. The depiction of the peaceful scenery of a rural village, the delicious dialect, and the vernacular materials are also elements that make this work stand out, and it can be said that it is the "transformation" of Kim Dong-hwa Hwabaek. The two protagonists of the work, Lee Hwa and his mother, observe each other's changes based on the same feeling of being "the same woman." As a mother, she watches her little daughter grow fondly, and as a daughter, she understands her mother's love. It is a work that tried to preserve the aesthetics of oriental metaphor and moderation, such as expressing the subtle psychology of the characters with shoes floating by a stream, or depicting the first night of the protagonist Lee Hwa with petals falling from the ceiling. |
