Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.
Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chuuou High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.
Career and major works:
Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shounen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.
In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.
During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.
Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series
Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shounen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.
During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku all were heavily seated in the romantic comedy genre, InuYasha was more akin to her dark Mermaid Saga. The series became her most eclectic work, featuring action, romance, horror, fantasy, (folklore-based) historical fiction, and comedy.

Với bề dày thành tích như trên, độc giả đã gán tặng Takahashi Rumiko biệt danh “công chúa manga”. Ngoài ra, bà còn mang danh hiệu là “họa sĩ truyện tranh được yêu thích nhất Nhật Bản”. Một điều đặc biệt là “Takahashi đã dành trọn cuộc đời mình cho manga” và đến nay bà vẫn chưa lập gia đình.
Tuổi thơ và khởi đầu sự nghiệp
Takahashi Rumiko chào đời vào ngày 10 tháng 10 năm 1957 tại Niigata, Nhật Bản. Theo một bài viết, vào thuở nhỏ niềm yêu thích manga của Rumiko không hơn gì so với những đứa trẻ khác, cô cũng hay vẽ nguệch ngoạc vào các trang vở của mình nhưng chưa hề nghĩ gì đến việc sẽ trở thành một mangaka chuyên nghiệp. Tuy nhiên trong một bài phỏng vấn năm 2000, chính Takahashi Rumiko lại khẳng định: “‘Tôi luôn muốn trở thành một họa sĩ truyện tranh chuyên nghiệp, ngay từ khi tôi còn là một đứa con nít.” Khi vào học khoa văn của trường Đại học Nihon Josei (Nihon Josei daigaku – Đại học Phụ nữ Nhật Bản), Rumiko bắt đầu tham gia Gekiga Sonjuku, một trường học nổi tiếng về manga theo trường phái kịch họa do magaka lừng danh Koike Kazuo sáng lập và bắt đầu con đường sáng tác của mình. Chính nhờ sự hướng dẫn của Koike mà Rumiko đã học được rất nhiều kiến thức quan trọng cũng như nâng cao “tay nghề” của mình lên rất nhiều, đặc biệt là hiểu được tầm quan trọng về tính cách đa dạng của các nhân vật, từ đó hình thành nên phong cách xây dựng nhân vật độc đáo của mình. Và kể từ lúc đó, cô sinh viên Rumiko đã bắt đầu tìm được công việc mà mình thật sự yêu thích. Nhận xét về Gekiga Sonjuku, Rumiko nói: “Tôi không thấy nó giống như một trường học, tôi thấy nó giống như tham gia một câu lạc bộ.”
Cũng trong thời gian ở Gekiga Sonjuku, Rumiko đã cùng làm việc với Yamamoto Atsuji và làm trợ lý cho Umezu Kazuo, một mangaka nổi tiếng về truyện kinh dị. Và ở Nihon Josei cô cũng trờ thành bạn thân của mangaka Meijiro Hanako và tiểu thuyết gia Hikawa Reiko.
Năm 1976, Rumiko chính thức bước vào con đường của một mangaka chuyên nghiệp, khởi đầu bằng việc xuất bản các truyện ngắn trong tập san của Câu lạc bộ Manga trường Nihon Josei. Các tác phẩm đầu tay của cô lúc đó có thể kể đến như là Thus A Half of Them Are Gone, Bye-Bye Road. Phải nói, sự lựa chọn để trở thành một mangaka chuyên nghiệp của Rumiko là một quyết định hết sức khó khăn. Cô đã gặp không ít trở ngại, từ kinh phí cho đến việc thiếu vắng sự ủng hộ của gia đình. Đồng thời, tính cạnh tranh của công việc này thật sự rất cao, thêm nữa ở Nhật Bản, thất bại trong tìm kiếm việc làm sẽ ảnh hưởng cực lớn đến tương lai. Cụ thể là, nếu Rumiko không tìm được công việc cho mình, chỉ trong vòng vài năm, cô sẽ không còn có cơ hội đó nữa vì khi đó, Rumiko sẽ bị các mangaka trẻ hơn nhưng năng lực không hề kém cạnh qua mặt. Và ở Nhật Bản các sinh viên chưa ra trường thường đăng ký trước công việc của mình với các công ty, vì vậy họ thường không có đủ chỗ cho những người xin việc khác, dù có bằng cấp đi chăng nữa.
Hồi tưởng lại thời gian này, Rumiko nói:
“Khả năng thành công là có, nhưng cũng có nhiều khó khăn sẽ đến với bạn. Đúng là ở Nhật Bản thì bạn có nhiều cơ hội thành công hơn, nhưng khi bạn thất bại thì sẽ mất tất cả. Vì vậy bạn phải quyết định và theo đuổi quyết định đó. Trong trường hợp của tôi, thành công không đến ngay mà nó cần thời gian trước khi mọi việc bắt đầu diễn ra trôi chảy. Tất nhiên, cách tốt nhất để tìm ra giải pháp là cứ theo đuổi nó, chờ một vài năm và luôn hy vọng điều tốt đẹp nhất sẽ xảy ra với mình”.
Tính cách và cuộc sống riêng
Takahashi Rumiko ngoài đời là một phụ nữ lặng lẽ, đơn giản, e dè, nhưng thân thiện và có sức lôi cuốn. Bà thích các thể loại truyện giống như Mermaid Scar, thích có một vật nuôi như P-chan. Công chúa manga còn là một người hâm mộ văn hóa Trung Hoa và Đông Nam Á. Bà cũng rất thích xem kịch Takarazuka, đọc sách, xem truyện tranh. Một trong những manga ưa thích của Takahashi là truyện tranh Người nhện được chuyển thể sang manga Nhật, vẽ bởi Ono Kosei, Koike và Ikegami Ryoichi. Tuy nhiên Takahashi không thích xem phim. Một trong những món ăn ưa thích của công chúa Manga là mì yakisoba.
Takahashi cũng rất thích đi du lịch, tuy nhiên lịch làm việc căng thẳng của một mangaka ít cho phép bà làm điều đó. Dù sao, ngay sau khi manga Một nửa Ranma kết thúc, bà cũng đã kịp làm một chuyến du lịch ba tuần tới bán đảo Yucatan, Mexico.

| In a high-stakes game of tag, Ataru must touch Lum’s horns in ten days—or aliens will take over the earth! The fact that Lum can fly doesn’t make Ataru’s job any easier. As it turns out, the game of tag is only the beginning of Ataru’s troubles, as he continues to attract strange encounters with otherworldly beings like beautiful snow spirit Oyuki and the sexy crow goblin Princess Kurama! Poor Ataru's life has never returned to normal since volatile extraterrestrial princess Lum fell for him. Now an excruciatingly wealthy and genteel rival, Mendo, adds to Ataru's torment. Not to mention an unending stream of extraordinary classroom visitors and educational materials including incompetent cherry blossom spirits, a legendary nightmare-eating tapir, and a fourth-dimensional camera that breaches alternate realities. Urusei Yatsura was awarded the 26th Shogakukan Manga Award for best shounen and shoujo manga in 1980. A 15-volume wideban edition was published from July 1989 to August 1990 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the series, an 18-volume bunkoban edition was published from August 1998 to December 1999, a shinsoban reprint with the same volume count as the original was published from November 2006 to March 2008, it included new cover art and a section displaying art work from modern manga artists. The series was published in English by VIZ Media as Lum*Urusei Yatsura in 1989 for 7 comic book size issues each covering two chapters until cancellation in 1990 due to poor sales. Publication was relaunched in VIZ's monthly publication Animerica where it was renamed to The Return of Lum*Urusei Yatsura, 8 collected volumes were published from June 5, 1995 to April 5, 1999. Roughly 11 volumes were covered in all, with some chapters being skipped. VIZ Media published a new release of Urusei Yatsura under the VIZ Signature imprint as 2-in-1 omnibus volumes from February 19, 2019 to February 28, 2023. It was also published in Spanish by EDT/Glénat España from April 2005 to March 2008. |
