Câu chuyện xảy ra ở một thị trấn nhỏ có tên là Tomoeda. Sakura Kinomoto - 1 cô bé 10 tuổi, trong 1 lần xuống tầng hầm đựng sách của bố, đã tìm thấy một quyển sách có bìa rất kì quặc. Tò mò mở quyển sách ra, cô bé không hề biết rằng mình đã vô tình mở dấu niêm phong của Clow cards - những tấm thẻ bài chứa đựng các phép thuật tinh luyện của pháp sư kì tài Clow Reed. Không chỉ có thế, Sakura còn gọi tên Windy card (lại vô tình) - thẻ bài Gió, khiến 1 cơn gió nổi lên, và tất cả những thẻ bài còn lại đã nhân cơ hội bay đi mất.

Với sức mạnh pháp thuật của mình, chắc chắn chúng sẽ gây ra tai họa cho thế giới. Vậy là từ đó, Sakura cùng với Tomoyo - cô bạn thân nhất và Kerberos - con thần thú cai quản cuốn sách, lên đường tìm kiếm những thẻ bài bỏ trốn. Sakura đã trở thành cardcaptor và câu chuyện bắt đầu ...
